Partnering with Shade Skin for Skin Cancer Checks

At St George’s College, we place great importance on the wellbeing of our students and staff. Our community is shaped by a commitment to care, connection and creating an environment where every individual can thrive, academically, socially and personally. As part of this ongoing commitment, we are pleased to be partnering with Shade Skin, a Western Australian skin cancer clinic, to provide free skin checks for our College community.

This initiative is part of Shade Skin’s broader #throwshade campaign, which aims to make skin cancer detection more accessible by bringing services directly to workplaces, clubs and schools across Perth. Through this collaboration, residents and staff at St George’s will be offered access to bulk-billed skin checks, delivered by qualified medical professionals in a convenient and supportive setting.

We are especially delighted to note that Shade Skin’s Medical Director, Dr Emily Alfonsi, is a St George’s College alumna. Dr Alfonsi is a proud member of the College community and has a shared commitment to holistic care.

A Proactive Approach to Health

As one of Australia’s sunniest cities, Perth residents face a higher-than-average risk of UV exposure throughout the year. For many young adults, particularly rural and interstate students living away from home, routine skin checks may not be top of mind. By offering this service onsite, we hope to remove barriers such as time, cost or uncertainty, and encourage our community to take a proactive role in managing their health.

This partnership reflects our belief that education extends beyond the classroom. Whether it is fostering physical wellbeing, encouraging conversations around mental health or supporting access to preventative healthcare, we strive to create a college experience that supports the whole person.

Supporting Our Staff and Students

We are especially pleased to extend this opportunity to our hardworking staff and students. Access to skin checks during the workday supports the personal health of our team and sends a clear message to our community that looking after your health is important and encouraged.

The checks are designed to be quick, discreet and reassuring, offering peace of mind and guidance should further care be needed. Residents will also be provided with educational resources and practical sun safety tips to help reduce long-term skin cancer risk.

Looking Ahead

We are grateful to the team at Shade Skin for bringing this initiative to life and for their shared belief in community-led healthcare. As a College, we are always seeking ways to improve and adapt the support we offer, and we see this collaboration as an important step in our evolving approach to student and staff wellbeing.

We look forward to working with the Shade Skin team and encourage all residents and staff to take advantage of this opportunity when bookings open.

Together, we can foster a culture where health is valued, wellbeing is championed and care for one another remains at the heart of college life.
